Comparing the Numeric Time References in Daniel and Revelation
Daniel 7:26 – “the saints will be handed over to him for a time, times, and half a time” – This is commonly assumed to represent 3 and ½ years. This was the period of the Jewish revolt from the invasion of the Roman army under Vespasian in the spring of 67 AD to the destruction of the Temple on Aug. 7, 70 AD, or the final end of any resistance in Jerusalem on Sept. 8, 70 AD. Alternatively, this could represent the 3 and ½ years of Nero’s persecution of Christians, beginning in Nov., 64 AD and ending with his death in 68 AD.
Daniel 8:14 – “How long will it take for the vision to be fulfilled—the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes desolation, and the surrender of the sanctuary and of the host that will be trampled underfoot? … It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be reconsecrated.”– The reference to the daily sacrifice (also in Daniel 8:11 and 12) suggests that 2,300 refers to 1,150 days of the required morning and evening sacrifices. This would be from the invasion by the Romans in the spring of 67 AD to the ending of these sacrifices in July 70 AD.
Daniel 9:24-27 – “70 sevens”– 70 weeks of years—see notes on Daniel, chapter 9 (properly understood as ending during the first century, with tthe 69th week ending with Birth of Jesus, and the 70th week split between 3.5 years of public ministry and 3.5 years for the 66-70 AD events culminating the Old Covenant era)
Daniel 12:7 – “How long will it be before these astonishing things are fulfilled? … It will be for a time, times, and half a time. When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed.”– Same as for Daniel 7:26.
Daniel 12:11 – “From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1290 days.”– The abomination that causes desolation was at hand when the Romans under Cestius originally surrounded Jerusalem in Nov., 66 AD (see Luke 21:20). The daily sacrifices were stopped in July 70 AD.
Daniel 12:12 – “Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1,335 days.”– This refers to the period of 12:11 extended until the siege of Jerusalem suddenly ends on Sept. 8, 70 AD, and Titus’ giving freedom and clemency for those imprisoned by the Jewish revolutionary factions. Alternatively, it refers to the Christians who had fled across the Jordan River at the beginning of this period in obedience to Jesus’ warning (Luke 21:21), as well as anyone who has survived and now can live in peace again.
Revelation 11:2 – “Go and measure the Temple of God and the altar, and count the worshipers there. But exclude the outer court; do not measure it, because it has been given over to the Gentiles. They will trample on the holy city for 42 months.” – From the invasion of the Roman army under Vespasian in the spring of 67 AD until the end of the war in Sept., 70 AD, with this period also including the atrocities done in Jerusalem by the warring factions among the Jews, as well as the Idumaens (Edomites).
Revelation 11:3 – “And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1260 days, clothed in sackcloth.”– The prophecy by the two witnesses is not recorded elsewhere, although the time frame is similar to 42 30-day months. Perhaps this is related to the account by Josephus referring to a man who proclaims woes upon Jerusalem for 7 years and 5 months of the period of the Jewish revolt.
Revelation 12:6 – “The woman fled into the desert to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1260 days.” – The woman is the church of believing Jews who heed the warning by Jesus (see Luke 21:21) and flee across the Jordan River and are preserved during the war.
Revelation 13:5 – “The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for 42 months.”– The Beast Nero exercises authority for 42 months in his persecution of Christians from Nov., 64 AD until he dies in 68 AD.
