A Special Baseball Birthday Gift
All of our boys played Little League baseball each summer when they were young. One year just before his birthday I noticed Stephen looking at the Sports section of our local newspaper, where they would publish the results of the previous evening’s games, and would include the names of anyone who had a multiple-base hit. To that point in the season Stephen had not done that. My heart’s desire was that he could have that honor, but I couldn’t make that happen. But the Lord could.
He had a game on the day before his birthday, and also a piano recital that same evening. The timing of the two activities was such that we went to the baseball game, but I told Stephen (and his coach) that we would need to leave after he had one at-bat in the 1st or 2nd inning, to be able to arrive at the recital on time.
In the 2nd inning he finally got an opportunity to bat. He hit a hard line drive into right field which went past the right fielder. While all of the other Little League fields had outfield fences, this particular field had no fence in right field, so the ball just kept rolling. While the fielder chased the ball, Stephen ran to 1st base, then 2nd base, then 3rd base, and even home. A home run!
After being congratulated by his team, we then had to immediately leave for the piano recital! But the next morning, on his birthday, his name was listed in the newspaper for hitting that home run! And I praised the Lord for loving me and Stephen enough to arrange it. Stephen put in the effort, and the Lord orchestrated the wonderful results.
